Argentina: On 11 March, at a business conference organised by the Argentine institute for petroleum and gas (IAPG) in Houston, Texas, Argentina’s treasury minister,
Nicolás Dujovne, and energy secretary,
Gustavo Lopetegui, presented investment opportunities for more than US$30bn in Argentina’s energy sector.
Dujovne also discussed measures being implemented by the government led by President
Mauricio Macri to stabilise Argentina’s economy. He said that despite 2018 being a
“difficult year” for many families and businesses, steps were being taken to stimulate economic growth.
Lopetegui pointed to the success of projects in the ‘Vaca Muerta’ shale oil and gas deposit in the previous year and stressed its importance for Argentina. He also highlighted the investment opportunities in Argentina for the coming years in oil and gas extraction (US$10bn), infrastructure (US$8.2bn), electricity and renewable energy (U$12bn), and access to new markets (US$3bn).
Lopetegui announced that in August 2019 a public tender will be awarded for the construction of a new gas pipeline to connect Vaca Muerta to Buenos Aires, which will require investments of US$1.5bn. The development of new renewable energies was also a key talking point at the conference, with 126 projects said to be underway.
