In brief: Mexico

* The head of Mexico’s tourism ministry (Sectur), Miguel Torruco, has announced that Mexico has fallen in the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)’s ranking of the most visited countries in 2018. Speaking at a business conference in Mexico City, Torruco said that the preliminary tourism data from the UNWTO show that Mexico will fall in the global tourism rankings for the first time since 2013 after receiving fewer foreign visitors than its competitors last year. According to Torruco, Mexico is due to fall from the its rank of sixth-most visited country in the world to seventh or eighth depending on the final UNWTO figures. Torruco’s announcement came despite the fact that Sectur has reported that the Mexico received a new record of 41.47m foreign tourists last year, the sixth consecutive year in which a record number of foreign visits have been recorded.
