Colombia’s Nato bet

On 31 May 2018 Colombia formally joined the Partnership for Peace programme of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato), making it the first and only Nato partner in Latin America. Nato’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and former president Juan Manuel Santos (2010-2018) formalised Colombia’s partnership at a signing ceremony in Brussels. The partnership was criticised by some countries in the region who consider it a threat to regional stability. The move was widely seen as a way for Colombia to bolster its international image and has been endorsed by Colombia’s current President Iván Duque.
