* Brazil’s national statistics institute (IBGE) has released its latest unemployment figures, which show that unemployment in the three months to February 2019 had increased to 12.4%, up from 11.6% in the previous quarter (September-November 2018). The total unemployed population grew to 13.1m people in December-February 2019, a 7.3% increase on the previous quarter. IBGE’s work & income coordinator,
Cimar Azeredo, notes that unemployment remains lower than it was in 2017, and that an increase in unemployment is always expected in the first months of the year.
Azeredo adds that 496,000 jobs were lost in the private sector, and 453,000 in the public sector.
