Guyana’s warring political parties are heading for a showdown at the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) as they battle for power at a time when the country has come into game-changing oil wealth. The A Partnership for National Unity (Apnu) coalition government headed by President David Granger was battling for survival after being on the receiving end of a vote of no confidence in parliament on 21 December last year which was upheld by the acting chief justice, Roxanne George-Wiltshire, just over a month later. But in a reversal of fortunes, on 22 March, Guyana’s Court of Appeal overturned the vote of no confidence the day after the expiry of the 90-day legal deadline for the government to call fresh elections.
