Guatemala: Doubts over US military cooperation

The US government revealed last month that it had suspended the transfer of some equipment and military training that it provides to Guatemala in protest at the misuse of vehicles it donated. The announcement made headlines as it signals one of the first US responses to growing concerns about the direction of anti-corruption efforts under President Jimmy Morales, who last year announced the decision to end the mandate of the United Nations (UN)-backed International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (Cicig), after it called for him to be investigated over allegations of illegal campaign financing. The US’s latest move has been linked to the strengthened position of the Democrats in the US House of Representatives following the November 2018 mid-terms.
