BRAZIL: Olavo re-ignites tensions in government

President Jair Bolsonaro’s government is broadly considered to be split into three groups, defined as the technocrats (which include Economy Minister Paulo Guedes and his team of economic liberals), the military representatives, and the ideologues (sometimes referred to as the populists). Some members of the latter group follow the teachings of maverick philosopher Olavo de Carvalho, whose ultra-conservative anti-globalism is believed to have influenced Bolsonaro and his agenda. From the safety of his home in the US state of Virginia, Carvalho has launched multiple online attacks against various members of the Bolsonaro administration, further undermining its fraught unity.
