MEXICO: Mother of all reforms enters senate

Mexico’s federal senate is poised to start debating what has been dubbed by some as ‘the mother of all reforms’. Following its approval by the federal chamber of deputies last week, the labour reform proposed by the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador formally entered the senate this week. The government will be hoping that a reform that will introduce major changes to the way in which the country’s labour justice system and trade unions operate can sail though the senate. However, the initiative is viewed with apprehension by both the business sector and union leaders and is producing political divisions even among the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena).
