Venezuela: calm before the storm?

Venezuela was the scene of an unusually quiet week over the Semana Santa Easter festival as the country’s antagonists regrouped ahead of two showdowns in the coming days. On 27 April the opposition figurehead and widely recognised interim president Juan Guaidó is preparing to ‘swear-in’ so-called ‘Operation Freedom’ protest groups formed over the course of the last month, while the government led by Nicolás Maduro has announced a march on the same day to celebrate Venezuela’s “definitive departure” from the Organization of American States (OAS). Then, on 1 May, marking International Labour Day, Guaidó is urging supporters to stage the largest nationwide protests in the country’s history to call for the government to resign and to demand that the armed forces assist in bringing the “usurpation of the presidency” to an end. The government is also rallying supporters to march on the same day.
