Juan Carlos Varela has inaugurated Line 2 of Panama’s Metro. The 21km line, which has 16 stations, services the areas east and north of Panama City. President Varela announced his intention to build the line, which cost over US$2bn back in 2013, in his electoral manifesto (ahead of taking office in 2014) as a part of his commitment to revamping the country's infrastructure. Construction began in 2015 by a consortium comprising Brazil’s Odebrecht and Spain’s Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC). On 2 April, Metro de Panamá SA (a government agency) revealed that it had received four proposals for the construction of Line 3 which will connect the provinces of Panamá and Panamá Oeste and span 26.5km. The proposals are from Consortium ACPC (formed of Spain’s Acciona and China’s Power China); Consortium Line 3 (formed of FCC and Mexico’s Cicsa); Consortium HPH (comprising South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering and Construction and Posco E&C); and China’s China Railway Group Limited.
