* Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has confirmed that his government will get rid of the country’s special economic zones (SEZ). Responding to a question during his daily morning press conference, López Obrador confirmed their total disappearance. “They were supposed to help, but they did nothing to help; they did business, they bought land and they squandered resources. There was absolutely no benefit,” López Obrador said of the seven SEZs that were created under his predecessor Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018) to incentivise investment. Mexico’s confederation of chambers of commerce, services and tourism (Concanaco-Servytur) had earlier proposed setting up working groups to discuss the continued existence of the SEZs, which it argues should remain as poles of investment and job creation. The future of the SEZs will be made official when the López Obrador government presents its national development plan (PND) to congress on 30 April.
