GUATEMALA: Renewed concerns about drug links in election

On 25 April, legislators from Guatemala’s opposition Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE) met with Pablo García, the deputy of foreign minister Sandra Jovel (who was out of the country) to discuss the case of Mario Amílcar Estrada Orellana, whose presidential candidacy for the right-of-centre Unión del Cambio Nacional (UCN) was revoked this week following his arrest in the US over alleged drug links and claims that he attempted to arrange the assassinations of two political rivals. The deputies had also wanted to meet with attorney general (AG) María Consuelo Porras, but she did not attend.
