In brief: Ecuador

* Ecuador’s ministry of energy and non-renewable natural resources has shared a press release announcing plans to appeal a court ruling for the protection the land of the Waorani people in Pastaza province. On 26 April, the Waorani people won a landmark legal battle against the Ecuadorean government for placing their land on the international market for oil exploration without seeking proper consent. The statement shared over the ministry’s Twitter page states that the government presented all necessary evidence, demonstrating that it had met “international standards” when seeking approval from the Waorani people, but the court did not take the evidence into account. In response, the indigenous group Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas de la Amazonía Ecuatoriana (Confeniae) has denounced the ministry’s statement as “an act of arrogance and an affront” to the court’s decision, affirming the need for the Waorani people to be vigilant to any “violations of their rights”.
