MEXICO: Testing times for López Obrador

Thousands of protesters took to the streets on 5 May in cities across Mexico to protest against the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Unlike other protests the Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) government has seen since it took office in December 2018, these marches were not organised by a dissatisfied union or a political opposition group, but by disillusioned individuals who coordinated themselves over social media platforms. López Obrador responded the following day with a clear message: while he has complete respect for the democratic right to protest, his government would not be yielding to public pressure to change course.
