COSTA RICA: Unpopular Alvarado celebrates successes

Costa Rica’s President Carlos Alvarado has marked his first year in office for the centre-left Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC). Since taking over the presidency, Alvarado has notched up some notable achievements – the approval of a new fiscal reform and reduction in homicide rates for the first time in five years. However, his popularity remains low due to his failure to address two significant public concerns: unemployment and the cost of living.
