LatinNews Regional Monitor: Mexico - 10 May 2019

In brief: Mexico

* The Mexican government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has issued a statement reiterating “its rejection of application of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act and reaffirms its commitment to providing legal protection to any Mexican companies affected”. The announcement by the foreign ministry (SRE) is in response to the historic decision announced last month by the US administration led by President Donald Trump to end the suspension of Title III of the Helms-Burton (Libertad) Act that allows US citizens, including naturalised Cubans, to sue companies and subsidiaries in Cuba believed to be using properties expropriated after the Cuban Revolution. The SRE notes that, “as is the case with other countries, Mexico is determining the appropriate legal authorities for filing actions related to the violations of international law caused by the Helms-Burton Act, and for protecting Mexican interests abroad”.
