Chile: Plans for safer streets

“Our government’s first priority is to combat crime and drug trafficking more efficiently,” President Sebastián Piñera said on 14 March as he announced a bill that would expand the police’s powers to stop and search suspect individuals in public spaces. Known as the law for preventative identity control, this bill is just one of recent measures unveiled as part of the Chilean government’s crime prevention agenda.
