BOLIVIA: Tensions rise ahead of campaign launch

“If you want to talk about transparency first you have to be transparent.” This was a retort made by President Evo Morales to his main rival in October’s presidential election, former president Carlos Mesa (2003-2005) who is running for Comunidad Ciudadana (CC). The two have been exchanging increasingly heated words and accusations in recent days, in turn linked to a major corruption scandal in the police which is proving embarrassing for the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government.
