MEXICO: Education reform passed but CNTE objects
After months of planning and years of disruptive protests by teachers’ unions, on 15 May, national teacher’s day, Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was finally able to announce the repeal of the 2012-2013 education reform approved under the previous government of Enrique Peña Nieto government (2012-2018) and promulgate his own new reform. Repealing Peña Nieto’s reform and replacing it with another that improves the quality of education in the country but that is fully supported by teachers was one of López Obrador’s electoral promises. This earned him the support of the combative Coordinadora Nacional de Trabjadores de la Educación (CNTE) union that led the protest campaigns against Peña Nieto’s reform. But the CNTE is not happy with the new reform and has vowed to continue its protest campaign.
