In brief: Peru

* Peru’s environment minister Lucía Ruíz has announced that in June the government led by President Martín Vizcarra will present a new legislative initiative which regulates the use of single-use plastics. Ruíz said she was working on the initiative along with representatives from the private sector, social organisations, and the state. She said that it is in line with wider legislation on non-reusable plastics which was approved by the Vizcarra government in December 2018 which establishes the regulatory framework to promote the sustainable consumption and production of plastic in Peru. Ruíz mentioned as provisions of the new legislation, the introduction of a new tax on single-use plastic bags in August 2019 and that supermarkets and shops will have 36 months to replace single-use plastic bags with reusable or biodegradable bags.
