MEXICO: López Obrador suffers first prominent departure

Germán Martínez Cázares has become the first high-ranking government official appointed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to quit the government. The head of the social security institute (IMSS) resigned in protest at what he believed is undue interference in the body by the finance ministry (SHCP), but he also expressed disillusionment with the government. His departure is the latest sign of strain within López Obrador’s leftist Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) government less than six months into his six-year term.
