TRACKING TRENDS

MEXICO | Unemployment on the rise. Unemployment was 3.4% for the economically active population in the first quarter of the year, according to data from the national statistics institute (Inegi) released on 16 May. This was higher than the 3.1% recorded during the same quarter last year. Mexico’s unemployed population currently stands at 1.9m people, up from 1.5m in the first quarter of 2018. Inegi attributes the increase in unemployment to population growth and more Mexicans becoming economically active.
