NICARAGUA: OAS ratchets up the pressure

The permanent council of the Organization of American States (OAS) has approved a new resolution on “the situation in Nicaragua” – its latest response to the crisis stemming from the crackdown by the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government led by President Daniel Ortega on its opponents which began in April 2018. Crucially the OAS resolution sets 18 June as a deadline for the release of all political prisoners – in line with an agreement inked in late March by the government and opposition Alianza Cívica por la Justicia y la Democracia (ACJD) [WR-19-14]. The OAS resolution intensifies the pressure on the Ortega government. It comes as the ACJD has again withdrawn from the on-off talks aimed at finding a solution to the crisis after the opposition decried foot-dragging by the government regarding the prisoners’ release and other agreements.
