* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has reported that the national unemployment rate stands at 12.5% for the period of February to April 2019, down 0.4 percentage points compared with the same period last year (12.9%) but an increase of 0.5 percentage points from the previous rolling quarter of November 2018-January 2019 (12.0%). This increase in unemployment is equivalent to a further 552,000 people finding themselves out of work. Underemployment for February-April 2019 stands at 24.9%, an increase of 0.4 percentage points compared with the same period of 2018 (24.5%) and an increase of 0.7 percentage points from the previous quarter (24.2%). The Ibge notes that the 28.4m people underemployed is the highest number since records began in 2012.
