* Mexico’s foreign minister
Marcelo Ebrard has arrived in Washington DC in preparation for a meeting with US Secretary of State
Mike Pompeo this week. The two governments will negotiate the blanket tariffs imposed by the US on Mexican products as a sanction for Mexico failing to stem the flow of illegal immigrants across the Mexico-US border. US President
Donald Trump announced on 30 May that a 5% tariff would be placed on all Mexican goods, which will be raised to 10% on 1 July, 15% on 1 August, 20% on 1 September etc. should Mexico not take action to reduce illegal migration. Ebrard will be joined by economy minister,
Graciela Márquez; deputy minister of North America,
Jesús Seade; agricultural minister,
Víctor Manuel Villalobos; and coordinator of presidential advisors,
Lázaro Cárdenas.
“We should find a political plan for coexistence with our northern neighbour. The only way to do this is through respect. Mexico is and always will be a great civilisation and will demand to be treated as such,” Ebrard tweeted.
