In brief: Dominican Republic

* Alexander Medina Herasme, the Dominican Republic (DR)’s director general of mining, has reported that mineral and metals exports for the first quarter of 2019 reached US$460m in the first quarter of 2019, up 6.3% on the same quarter in 2018. Director Herasme attributed this increase to a rise in prices and production of gold and the price of iron-nickel alloy following the start of operations in November 2018 of a second production line of the Falcondo iron-nickel mine in La Vega province. Herasme said that DR’s metal and mineral exports in 2018 amounted to US$1.77bn – 18% of the country’s total exports.
