CHILE: Piñera underwhelms with balance sheet

President Sebastián Piñera last week delivered his state-of-the-nation address. This took place as his approval ratings are at their lowest since taking office for a second time in March 2018, a slump attributed to nepotism complaints (stemming from the fact that his two sons accompanied him on a recent state visit to China and attended business meetings) as well as more general fears about the direction of the economy. While compelled to acknowledge these economic-related concerns in his address to the nation, Piñera also sought to highlight efforts by his right-of-centre Chile Vamos coalition government to address another major public concern - crime and insecurity.
