ARGENTINA: Negative electoral streak continues for Cambiemos

Argentina’s ruling centre-right Cambiemos coalition has yet to win a provincial election in the current cycle. The party that supports President Mauricio Macri failed to capture either of the two provincial seats that were contested on 2 June and it has now been defeated in six provincial polls this year. This is fuelling concerns within Cambiemos ahead of October’s presidential vote, diminishing the prospects for Macri’s re-election bid. The negative streak only increases the doubts within the ruling coalition and could potentially lead to it being forced into adopting a radically different electoral strategy in order to avoid defeat in the presidential contest.
