In brief: Chile

* Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera has met his Ecuadorean counterpart Lenín Moreno in Chile’s capital Santiago for a binational cabinet meeting. The meeting culminated in the signing of the Declaration of Santiago, which comprised 26 bilateral instruments and 109 commitments in the areas of: economic integration for development, global, security & defence Issues for integration; sustainable environmental management; cooperation for social & human development; human rights, cultural integration & human mobility; and housing, urban infrastructure & public works. Of particular note, the two leaders spoke of bilateral and economic relationships, with Chile reiterating its strong support for Ecuador’s interest in joining the Pacific Alliance trade bloc whose full members include Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. The two sides also emphasised efforts to deepen and expand existing bilateral economic and trade agreements.
