Peru: Consolidating fight against illegal mining in the Amazon

The Peruvian government has launched a second phase of its ‘Operación Mercurio 2019’ aimed at bolstering the fight against illegal mining in the Amazonian region of Madre de Dios. This second phase consists of increasing the presence of the military in Madre de Dios’s La Pampa area, where a lot of illegal mining activity is concentrated, by establishing new military bases. The initiative is part of the government’s objective to eradicate an illegal activity that costs the country millions of dollars in lost revenue but has also produced significant environmental damage to the Amazon rainforests.
