GUATEMALA: Spike in attacks on human rights defenders

A report released at the start of this year by Irish-based NGO Frontline Defenders revealed that in 2018, 26 human rights activists were killed in Guatemala, with countless more threatened or criminalised for defending their communities. While the country’s general homicide rate continues its steady decline, this figure means that the situation has deteriorated for human rights defenders (HRDs) to the extent that Guatemala stands out on a regional and global level.
