MEXICO: López Obrador claims dubious diplomatic triumph

“Good news for Mexico the tariffs that were going to be unjustly imposed will not be forthcoming…. tranquillity and confidence in Mexico so that there continues to be investment, work, and well-being in our country has returned.” With these words Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador greeted the agreement struck by his government with the US to prevent the imposition of tariffs on Mexican imports that had been announced by President Donald Trump. López Obrador says that the agreement is a victory for diplomacy and dialogue over impositions and threats. But there is a concern that Mexico has left itself open to being pressured by the Trump administration into other more unpalatable concessions in the future.
