* Three unions operating at the Chuquicamata copper mine in Antofagasta Region, which is operated by Chile's state-owned mining company Codelco, have begun a strike to demand better working conditions and benefits. The strike coincides with the opening of a new phase of underground exploitation plans at the mine, which will result in the reallocation of nearly 1,700 jobs. According to a statement by Chuquicamata union 3, the primary goal of the strike is to obtain health coverage for the workers, in particular those whose positions will be impacted by the opening of the new phase. According to Codelco figures, the Chuquicamata mine alone produced 320,744 metric tonnes (t) of fine copper in 2018, out of the total 1.8mt produced by Codelco last year.
