LatinNews Regional Monitor: Caribbean & Central America - 19 June 2019

In brief: Panama

* Panama’s ministry of trade & industry (MICI) has announced that on 22 June the first shipment of beef will be sent to mainland China. MICI minister Néstor González warned that such exports may contribute to increase the prices of beef in Panama that are currently ‘low’ because of excess supply. The announcement comes two years after diplomatic relations between the two countries were forged. In 2017 Panama became the second country in the sub-region – after Costa Rica – to forge ties with mainland China and break with Taiwan.
