BRAZIL: Challenges to the education system under Bolsonaro
Brazilians took to the streets of dozens of cities across the country in May for several different mass demonstrations. While those which took place on 26 May gathered supporters of right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro, the other two – on 15 and 30 May – were in defence of the country’s public education system, particularly higher education, after the federal education minister, Abraham Weintraub, announced in late-April a 30% freeze of federal universities’ budget for discretionary spending.
