LatinNews Regional Monitor: Mexico - 21 June 2019

In brief: Mexico

* On 18 June, Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador discussed in a video conference with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg about bringing universal internet access to Mexico. This initiative is focused on improving connectivity in the country, in order to enhance social conditions, especially in rural places. In a short clip published on López Obrador’s Twitter account, he said: “This is a programme to communicate, inform, and improve education and health at a very low cost”. López Obrador offered limited details on the partnership but commented that this initiative should rely on existing infrastructure, namely the electricity grids, and that it should not be a profit lucrative project. Facebook is currently partnered with providers in Mexico, including Viasat and Hughes.
