In brief: Panama

* Panama’s outgoing economy & finance minister, Eyda Varela de Chinchilla, has resigned her post effective from 27 June, a mere three days before the end of her term. Varela did not give a reason for her resignation, although critics point out it comes after the Financial Action Task Force (FAFT) added Panama to its list of ‘high-risk’ countries. Varela’s designated successor, due to take over on 1 July, is Héctor Alexander.
