Uruguay has not experienced such a dirty campaign ahead of elections before. And this is just the internal party primary elections, which will take place on 30 June. The party leadership of the main opposition centre-right Partido Nacional (PN, Blancos) turned to the judiciary on 20 June to denounce the use of fake news on social media outlets against presidential pre-candidates. It did not single out Juan Sartori, the 37-year-old multi-millionaire businessman who has burst onto the political scene by contesting the PN primaries, but the object of its complaint was clear.
