Migration problems set to intensify

A photograph of the drowned bodies of Oscar Alberto Martínez and his nearly-two-year-old daughter Valeria, floating head down in the Rio Bravo, which marks the Mexico-US frontier (also known as the Rio Grande), has once more highlighted the migration crisis in the Americas. Like a similarly tragic photo taken on the other side of the world in 2015, of drowned Syrian toddler Alan Kurdi, it was published widely in June, drawing attention to the humanitarian tragedy that is playing out in the US and Central America. There are doubts that the policies of US president Donald Trump and of his Mexican opposite number Andrés Manuel López Obrador will lead to an improvement.
