Kidnappings put López Obrador under pressure

On 4 June, Norberto Ronquillo, a 22-year old marketing student at Mexico City’s (CDMX) Pedregal university, was kidnapped after leaving class. The standard chain of events unfolded: his family received a call demanding a ransom, the ransom was then paid, but Ronquillo never made it home. His body was found on 10 June, almost a week after he went missing. The story has gripped a nation accustomed to high levels of violence, while the fate of Ronquillo and some alleged police negligence in the case have cranked up the pressure on President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Mexico City’s mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, a member of the federally ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party and long-standing associate of López Obrador, to address a perennial problem.
