MEXICO: Fear of rights violations as national guard launched

A group of local NGOs has called on the Mexican authorities not to allow the national guard (GN) to persecute migrants. The call came after the GN formally began operations this week and was given the task of reinforcing border security and assisting immigration authorities in their efforts to curb illegal migration through Mexico and into the US. Ever since President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced the creation of what is essentially a new militarised federal security force, human rights organisations have been warning that relying on it to carry out policing duties would result in an upsurge in rights violations. But using the GN to crack down on irregular migrants is even more politically sensitive given that some migrants are escaping violence and oppression at home and should be offered assistance rather than being harshly treated.
