Bolsonaro meets Trump

Brazil: On 28 June, Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro met US President Donald Trump in Osaka, Japan, during the G-20 Summit. The two right-wing politicians expressed political support for one another in the coming year. Bolsonaro said, “I support Trump. I support the US. I support your upcoming re-election”, and he invited President Trump to visit Brazil sometime soon. In response, Trump declared Bolsonaro’s election as “one of the greatest election wins anywhere in the world”, and described him as, “a special man, doing very well, very much loved by the people of Brazil”. Bolsonaro and Trump have used similar tactics to gain support in their respective countries, and the two leaders, whose personalities have frequently been compared, seem to enjoy quite a friendly relationship. Although President Trump dodged questions about Brazil-US collaboration regarding a potential trade war with China, he did mention that the two presidents were “talking about a lot of trade”. Additionally, Trump ended with remarks blaming socialism for the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.
