LatinNews Regional Monitor: Andean Group - 11 July 2019

In brief: Peru

* Some 200 national police (PNP) officers have arrived as backup in the town of Arequipa (the capital of the eponymous region) in response to protests after Peru’s energy & mining ministry (Minem) granted Southern Perú Copper Corporation (SPCC), a subsidiary of Grupo México, the licenses necessary to carry out more construction and expansion on its Tía María mining project, a copper oxide processing development. The move was met by resounding discontent from the local community, who published a letter to President Martín Vizcarra saying it “profoundly laments” the decision.
