SURINAME: Ruling NDP sees drop in support

Back in April, an opinion poll conducted in Suriname’s capital Paramaribo indicated a sharp decline in popularity for President Desi Bouterse’s National Democratic Party (NDP). Another poll in May, in Wanica district, reinforced this finding. However, caution is necessary before reading too much into these polls. Suriname has a complicated voting system, and the government can use the power of incumbency to bolster its position between now and the May 2020 general election.
