PERU | Tía María. On 9 July mining firm, Southern Perú Copper Corporation (SPCC), a subsidiary of Grupo México, announced that it had received authorisation from the Peruvian government to go ahead with its plans to develop the ‘Tía María’ copper mining project. The US$1.4bn project has been in the pipeline since 2009 but it was suspended in 2015 following violent protests (that produced some fatalities) by members of the local community, who complained that the mine would use up all local water sources and negatively impact the local agriculture-based economy.
