BRAZIL: Pension reform euphoria dies down

The excitement that followed Brazil’s chamber of deputies’ 379-vote approval of the pension reform’s base text last week [WR-19-27] has fast subsided, as the realities of congressional procedures have checked the initial optimism. The president of the chamber of deputies, Rodrigo Maia, who congratulated his peers for their “historic vote” with teary eyes on 10 July, has now ruled that the pension reform will not be submitted to a second vote in the chamber until August, dashing hopes that it would reach the senate before congress broke for recess this week.
