In brief: Mexico prepares to roll out nationwide internet access

* Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that a new public telecommunications company has already been created to provide internet to people throughout the country. Using the entire infrastructure of the federal electricity commission (CFE), Mexico’s state-owned electricity company, the new company has already been approved by the board of directors of the CFE, with an application currently in process to ensure it will reach all those who live in the most remote communities of the country. President López Obrador affirmed that the network will also be used for the operation of Banco del Bienestar, an institution in charge of dispersing resources across the country from the federal government’s social programmes to its beneficiaries.
