* The multinational mining company Anglo-American has submitted an environmental impact study (EIA) seeking to maintain output from its Los Bronces copper mine in Chile’s O'Higgins Region. Acting as an ore replacement project, the company plans to use underground mining technology to ensure zero impact on the surface. In an official statement, the company declared that the project “
was not designed to have significant environmental impacts”, following a strict sustainability criterion to not impact glaciers or biodiversity, nor increase the use of freshwater sources in the area. The project is the result of six years of scientific studies, analysis, and participatory dialogue with communities in the area, from which they defined the conditions that the project had to meet in order to live harmoniously with its environment.
