* The state-run Costa Rican electricity institute (ICE) has officially inaugurated the geothermal plant Las Pailas II, the most modern facility of its type in Central America and the Caribbean. Located in Curubandé canton, Guanacaste province, the new plant has 55 megawatts of installed capacity, with the amount of energy produced a year equivalent to the average annual energy consumption of 137,000 homes. According to a presidential press release, Las Pailas II is the seventh energy generation project in the country that uses volcanic steam to produce electricity. state-of-the-art” turbine, sound insulation panels and a fiberglass cooling tower.
