Divisions between Bolivia's cocaleros again laid bare

Last month cocaleros (coca producers) affiliated with Asociación Departamental de Productores de Coca de Los Yungas de La Paz (Adepcoca), an organization which represents Bolivia’s traditional Yungas coca producing area (La Paz department), began fresh protests in La Paz. The unrest exposes ongoing divisions within the cocalero movement – a key support base of President Evo Morales, himself a cocalero albeit from the Chapare, in Cochambamba department, Bolivia’s other main coca producing region.
